Troubleshooting

Common player problems

The errors players send screenshots of, what they mean and what to tell them.

By Alex · updated Sep 18, 2026

Find the message the player sees, then work through the fix in order. Most of these can be answered with a copy-paste.

Troubleshooting

If you see

"Outdated client! Please use 1.21.x"

Outdated client disconnect screen
Why
The player's Minecraft version is older than the server's.
Fix
  1. In the launcher, pick "Latest release" (or 1.21.4+) and hit Play.
  2. Using a modpack or Lunar/Badlion? Switch that profile to 1.21.4.
If you see

"Connection timed out: no further information"

Connection timed out screen
Why
The player can't reach the server at all. Usually a typo in the IP, their network, or the server is restarting.
Fix
  1. Check the IP is exactly play.caelumsmp.com (no https://, no port).
  2. Check #status on Discord for a restart or outage.
  3. Ask them to try a phone hotspot. If that works, it's their network or firewall.
  4. School and work networks often block Minecraft. Nothing we can do there.

Escalate: More than 3 players reporting it at once: ping an Admin, the server may be down.

If you see

"Failed to verify username!"

Failed to verify username screen
Why
Mojang's login servers couldn't confirm the account. Usually a stale launcher session.
Fix
  1. Fully restart the launcher (log out and back in if that doesn't help).
  2. Check status.mojang.com. If Mojang is down, everyone has to wait it out.
  3. Cracked or offline-mode accounts can't join. We're a premium-only server.
If you see

"You don't have Pebble's permission to build here."

Claim permission message in chat
Why
They're inside someone else's claim. Claims are working as intended.
Fix
  1. Show them the claim edges: hold a golden shovel or run /claim show.
  2. If it's their friend's claim, the owner runs /trust <player>.
  3. If they say the claim is theirs, check /claim info. Alts and name changes sometimes cause this.
If you see

"My items disappeared after a lag spike"

Why
A rollback or crash lost their last few seconds, or they died and didn't notice.
Fix
  1. Run /co lookup u:<player> a:inventory t:1h to see what they had.
  2. Check /deaths <player> for a recent death.
  3. If the log shows the items, escalate to a Mod for a restore. Helpers can't give items.

Escalate: Item restores are Mod-only. Paste the lookup output in the ticket.
